chateau-beau-sejour-becot-saint-emilion-grand-cru-1993-075
Chateau Beau-Sejour Becot Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 1993 AOC 0,75l

The 1993 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is a red wine from Bordeaux’s Right Bank, in a 75 cl bottle. The estate lies just west of the village of Saint-Émilion, on the limestone plateau of Saint-Martin de Mazerat. When this wine was harvested, Beau-Séjour Bécot was a Grand Cru Classé; today, the estate is a Premier Grand Cru Classé.

The name Beau-Séjour dates back to 1787. In 1869, the property was divided between two heirs, and the present-day Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse was formed from one half. In 1969, Michel Bécot bought the other half and gave it his family name; in 1979, the estate expanded to include the neighboring vineyards of La Carte and Trois Moulins. This annexation, carried out without a formal request, led to its demotion in 1986. From the mid-1980s, the estate was run by Michel’s sons, Gérard and Dominique; today it is led by the third generation, Juliette Bécot and her husband Julien Barthe.

The plateau’s limestone also shapes the work in the cellar. Michel Bécot converted about seven hectares of ancient underground quarries into aging cellars, where bottles from more than a hundred vintages now rest. His sons later introduced numerous technical innovations. Today, the wine matures for about sixteen months in a mix of new barriques, amphorae, and large casks.

The vineyard, now 22 hectares, sits on astéries limestone, the fossil-bearing rock typical of Saint-Émilion, and is planted mainly with Merlot, alongside some Cabernet Franc. A Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1955 and 1969, when it bore the name Beauséjour-Fagouet, the estate was a Grand Cru Classé from 1986 to 1996, when it returned to the ranks of the Premiers Grands Crus Classés.

1993 is remembered in Bordeaux as a difficult vintage. After a hot, sunny summer, September brought heavy rain, which continued until the end of the harvest. In Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, where the grapes were picked before those in the Médoc, the wines showed few signs of dilution. After more than thirty years in bottle, a Saint-Émilion from this vintage is generally a mature wine, in which the fruit has given way to notes of development.

This is the estate’s grand vin; alongside it, the family now produces a second wine, Petit Bécot. A bottle of this age should be opened slowly, or gently decanted to leave the sediment at the bottom. Serve the wine at 16-17 °C with roast lamb, pigeon, or aged cheeses.

In STELT's selection, this 1993 Beau-Séjour Bécot is a Saint-Émilion from the limestone plateau, with more than thirty years in bottle, for those who want to discover a historic Right Bank estate through an older vintage.
