The appellation was established in 1987 to distinguish the northern part of the Graves, on the outskirts of Bordeaux.

According to the château, the name comes from a Carbonnieu family who cultivated vines in Léognan in the thirteenth century. The Benedictines of Sainte-Croix Abbey ceded the land to the Ferrons in 1519 and bought it back in 1740; in the eighteenth century, the monks made Carbonnieux’s whites famous, which, according to the estate’s tradition, reached the Ottoman sultan’s court as “mineral water.” Sold as a national asset in 1791, the domaine changed hands several times until 1956, when the Perrin family bought it.

Marc Perrin restored the domaine and replanted its vines. His son Antony, who took the reins after his father’s death, built a new cuvier in 1990 and was among the promoters of the Pessac-Léognan appellation; today, the estate is run by his children Eric, Christine, and Philibert. The grapes are harvested by hand and vinified plot by plot; for the red, the estate seeks slow, gentle extraction, followed by ageing in French oak barriques, currently for fourteen months.

Carbonnieux was classified in 1953, with a revision in 1959, for both red and white wines, a rare double distinction in the Graves. The vineyard, a single 100-hectare plot, lies on a small hill of gravel deposited by the Garonne and drained by the Eau Blanche stream. Today, the red grapes are half Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 percent Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot; Cabernet Sauvignon also predominated in 1992.

In the Pessac-Léognan area, 1992 began with a dry winter that lasted until May; June was very wet, and flowering was long and uneven. July and August were hot, but rain predominated in August, and the vintage was saved by meticulous work in the vineyard to combat mildew and downy mildew. In Bordeaux, 1992 is remembered as an average vintage with a very abundant harvest. The appellation’s regulations note that, with age, these reds leave behind the cassis of youth for smoky, spicy aromas of leather and plum.

Today, the vineyard is divided almost equally between red and white grapes, and the red is one of the estate’s two grand vins, alongside the white. The family also produces La Croix de Carbonnieux, red and white wines from selected plots, and Château Tour Léognan, from young vines.

In the STELT selection, this Carbonnieux 1992 is a red Pessac-Léognan with more than thirty years in bottle, offering a chance to discover the red side of a cru classé famous for its whites since the eighteenth century.
