chateau-cos-d-estournel-saint-estephe-1993-075
Chateau Cos d'Estournel Saint-Estèphe 1993 AOC 0,75l

This Cos d'Estournel 1993 is the grand vin of Château Cos d'Estournel, in Saint-Estèphe, the northernmost communal appellation in the Médoc. In the 1855 classification, the estate was ranked among the second growths, a status it retains today. This 0.75-liter bottle comes from a vintage marked by September rain.

Cos’s history began in 1791, when Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel inherited the lands of Cos and Pomys. From 1838, Louis-Gaspard also sold his wine in India: this trade gave rise to the nickname “the Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe” and the Oriental-style pagodas that still crown the cellars today. Burdened by debt, Louis-Gaspard had to sell the estate in 1852. In 1917 Cos was bought by négociant Fernand Ginestet; from 1970 it passed to his grandsons, the Prats family, and was managed by Bruno Prats until its sale in 1998. Since 2000, the owner has been Michel Reybier, who restored the pagoda building and built a fully gravity-fed winery.

Today, the vineyard covers around one hundred hectares, planted about two-thirds to Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate adapts its work to the soil and exposure of each plot, harvests by hand, and vinifies the plots separately before blending.

The name Cos comes from old Gascon and means “hill of pebbles.” The estate occupies a rise at the southernmost edge of Saint-Estèphe, on the border with Pauillac, next to the vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild. At its center is a plateau of deep gravel, and on the two slopes, facing east and south, the gravel mingles with clay.

In 1993, the Médoc had a hot, dry August through the first week of September; then the month turned cool and very rainy, with about three times the normal rainfall, until the end of the harvest. The Médoc wines, harvested after those on the right bank, generally turned out more austere. Over time, the tannins in great Médoc reds round out and notes of tobacco, cedar, and undergrowth emerge.

Alongside the grand vin, Cos d'Estournel now produces a second wine, Les Pagodes de Cos, and a white Cos d'Estournel. A red wine of this age should be served at 16-18 °C, with roast meats or aged cheeses. Before decanting it, it is best to taste it, as an old wine may open up in the air or prove fragile.

In the STELT selection, this 1993 Cos d'Estournel is a second growth to choose to discover the estate during the Prats years, in a difficult vintage for the Médoc.
