chateau-du-glana-saint-julien-1999-075
Chateau du Glana Saint-Julien 1999 AOC 0,75l

This Château du Glana 1999 is a red Saint-Julien, in a 0.75-liter bottle. Saint-Julien is an appellation in the Médoc where the eleven 1855 classified growths produce around ninety percent of the wine. Glana lies between Beychevelle and the village of Saint-Julien, opposite Château Ducru-Beaucaillou.

The château was built in 1870 to a design by Nadeau, architect of the city of Blaye, for the owner at the time, Cayx. The vineyard originated with the division of Château Saint-Pierre, a fourth growth in 1855, and initially covered five hectares. In 1961, the estate was bought by Gabriel Meffre, a nurseryman well known in the Vaucluse, who expanded it to forty-three hectares with parcels that had belonged to Château Lagrange, a third growth of Saint-Julien. Today, the estate is run by his son Jean-Paul Meffre and his grandsons Ludovic and Julien.

According to the family, Glana’s quality has steadily improved since 1999. In 2003, the buildings were completely renovated, from the vat room to the barrel cellar. Today, leaf thinning and crop thinning are carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, with considered pest control; the wine undergoes cold maceration before fermentation and matures for twelve months in barrels.

The vineyards, today covering around 59 hectares in almost one continuous block, grow on gravel deposited by the Garonne and are planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, which according to the estate provides structure and aging potential, along with Merlot, which provides roundness. Glana is not a cru classé: in the past, the wine was labeled Cru Bourgeois, but today the estate is not listed in the Médoc Crus Bourgeois classification.

In the Médoc, 1999 was an early and abundant year, with a mild winter, budbreak in late March, rapid flowering, a warm, sunny summer, and a hot, dry spell from mid-August to mid-September. Then, just as the harvest was beginning, the rain arrived, and the winegrowers had to pick quickly; in the Médoc, Cabernet-rich wines achieved better results. With age, Saint-Julien reds usually develop notes of tobacco, truffle, and leather.

This is the estate’s grand vin; today it is accompanied by a second wine, Pavillon du Glana. A Saint-Julien of this age is served at 16-18 °C with roast meats, poultry, or aged cheeses. Before decanting it, it is best to taste it, because an old wine may open up in the air or prove fragile.

In STELT's selection, this 1999 Glana is a family Saint-Julien, born in the year the estate says its growth began, to be chosen to discover the appellation beyond the crus classés.
