chateau-grand-corbin-despagne-saint-emilion-grand-cru-1993-075
Chateau Grand Corbin-Despagne Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 1993 AOC 0,75l

The 1993 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from Château Grand Corbin-Despagne is a Right Bank Bordeaux red, in a 75 cl bottle. The estate is located in the north of the appellation, bordering Pomerol. In 1993, Grand Corbin-Despagne was Grand Cru Classé, and it still is today. According to the supplier’s description, the label on this bottle is damaged.

The Despagne name has been connected to the lands of Saint-Émilion since at least the early 17th century: the oldest family document is a 1665 baptism record. In 1812, Louis Despagne settled in Corbin, near Cheval Blanc, where the family had been tenant farmers, and bought the first plots. The name Château Grand Corbin-Despagne appeared in the late 19th century, and in the 20th century Paul Despagne built the estate’s reputation. François Despagne, the seventh generation, has led it since 1996.

With François Despagne, work started again from the soil. A study of 150 pits dug in the vineyard led to its division into 53 plots, according to grape variety, rootstock, vine age, and soil. Grass between the rows, lower yields, and plot-by-plot winemaking became the norm, and chemical herbicides were never used. Since 2013, the entire vineyard has been certified organic, and the estate has begun converting to biodynamic farming. This 1993 comes from before that turning point.

The estate’s nearly 29 hectares lie on clay-siliceous soils over «crasse de fer», an iron-rich subsoil, and on ancient sands over blue clay. Three quarters of the vineyard is Merlot, and almost all the rest is Cabernet Franc. A Grand Cru Classé since 1955, the estate lost the title in the 1996 revision and regained it in 2006; when that revision was annulled, a 2009 law restored the title, and the 2012 and 2022 classifications confirmed it.

In Bordeaux, 1993 was a rainy vintage. After a hot summer, September’s rains continued throughout the harvest; on the Right Bank, where the harvest came before the Médoc’s, the wines were less affected by dilution. At more than thirty years old, a Saint-Émilion red of this kind is generally a mature wine, in which the fruit has given way to more developed aromas.

This is the estate’s grand vin; alongside it, the family produces a second wine, Petit Corbin-Despagne. A bottle of this age should be opened slowly, or gently decanted to separate the sediment. Serve the wine at 16-17 °C with duck, lamb, or hard cheeses.

In the STELT selection, this 1993 Grand Corbin-Despagne is a family-owned Saint-Émilion from the Pomerol side, for anyone who wants to discover a historic estate as it was before its renovation.
