The vineyard is located in Talence and Pessac, directly opposite Château Haut-Brion.

The story began in 1540 with the Bordeaux merchant Arnaud de Lestonnac. In 1682, a bequest from his descendant Olive passed to the Lazarists, the priests of the Mission, who gave the domaine its name and built the chapel in 1698. Confiscated during the Revolution and later passed through several owners, the domaine was bought in 1919 by Frédéric Woltner, who in 1926 was the first to install enamel-coated steel vats. His son Henri led La Mission until his death in 1974; in 1983, the Woltner heirs sold it to Domaine Clarence Dillon, the company of the American family that has owned Haut-Brion since 1935.

The arrival of the Dillon family brought vineyard renovations and a modern cuvier, inaugurated with the 1987 harvest. Today the grapes are harvested by hand and the red wine is aged for eighteen to twenty months in barriques, with the proportion of new oak adjusted to the vintage. The wines have been entrusted to the Delmas family for three generations.

The gravel soils of La Mission, small quartz pebbles, belong to the same terrace as Haut-Brion and form deposits ranging in thickness from around twenty centimeters to over three meters, over a subsoil of clay, sand and limestone, including shell-bearing limestone. The vineyard covers 29 hectares, around 25 planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and just over 4 with white grapes. La Mission's red wine has been a cru classé de Graves since the 1953 classification, revised in 1959.

According to the château, a very mild winter in 1994 brought the vine cycle forward, a cool, wet spring slowed it down a little, and the summer was hot, with several thunderstorms. September rains hastened the harvest, which took place from September 12 to 24, with grapes that were generally healthy and ripe. The wine blends Merlot (57 percent), Cabernet Sauvignon (42) and Cabernet Franc (1). In Bordeaux, 1994 is considered a good but uneven vintage, more successful for Merlot. After thirty years in bottle, the tannins in a red wine like this soften and the bouquet grows more complex.

Alongside the red, La Mission produces a white wine from Sémillon and Sauvignon, which in 1994 was still called Château Laville Haut-Brion and, from the 2009 vintage, took back the name La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc. The second wine, La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion, bears the name of the Lazarist chapel.

In the STELT selection, this 1994 La Mission Haut-Brion is a Cru Classé de Graves with over thirty years in bottle, to be opened at leisure.
