chateau-lascombes-margaux-2006-15
Chateau Lascombes Margaux 2006 AOC 1,5l

This Château Lascombes 2006 is a red Margaux in a one-and-a-half-liter Magnum format. Château Lascombes is a second growth in the 1855 classification, and 2006 belongs to the years of great renewal at the estate, which began in 2001 with the arrival of new American owners.

In 2001, the American investment fund Colony Capital bought Lascombes from the British group Bass Charrington, which had owned it since 1971. Management was entrusted to Dominique Befve, and winemaker Michel Rolland joined as a consultant. In 2011, the estate passed to MACSF, a French mutual insurance company, and in 2022 to the American Lawrence family, owners of Heitz Cellar in Napa Valley, who entrusted the estate’s management to Axel Heinz, who had headed famous Tuscan red wines for seventeen years.

Colony Capital built a new four-level winery, where grapes and wine move by gravity, and expanded the Margaux vineyard from around 84 to around 118 hectares. For 2006, the estate’s technical sheet describes a hand harvest carried out in several passes according to the ripeness of each parcel, with sorting in the vineyard and winery. After cold maceration, the wine remained on the skins for 30 to 35 days, according to daily tastings, and matured in barriques; the yield was 36 hectoliters per hectare.

The 2006 is made from a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, all from the estate’s historic parcels. The 45% Merlot is a hallmark of Lascombes: few of the great wines of Margaux contain so much.

2006 was a year of sharp fluctuations. Intense heat from mid-June to the end of July brought forward veraison; August, cool and rainy, slowed ripening, and the heat returned at the end of the month. Cool September rains made it necessary to choose the right day for each parcel: at Lascombes, the harvest lasted from September 21 to October 13. The grapes nonetheless reached good ripeness on the finest terroirs. Twenty years after the harvest, a Margaux of this caliber usually begins to bring together fruit and the aromas of development; in Magnum format, this process is slower, because there is twice as much wine for the same amount of air in the neck.

In the estate’s range, the grand vin, Château Lascombes, is the wine intended for long aging; since 1997, it has been joined by the second wine, Chevalier de Lascombes. This Magnum should be served at around 17-18 °C with grilled red meat, lamb, or aged cheeses.

In the STELT selection, this 2006 Margaux is the second growth that tells the story of modern Lascombes, in a format to share with friends.
