chateau-phelan-segur-saint-estephe-2006-075
Chateau Phélan Ségur Saint-Estèphe 2006 AOC 0,75l

This Phélan Ségur 2006 is the grand vin of Château Phélan Ségur, in Saint-Estèphe, in a 0.75-liter bottle. The estate's vines border those of Château Montrose and Château Calon-Ségur, and the château overlooks the Gironde estuary from atop a hill. Phélan Ségur is not part of the 1855 classification.

The estate takes its name from Bernard O'Phelan, an Irish wine merchant who arrived in Bordeaux at the end of the eighteenth century, bought the Clos de Garramey in 1805 and the domaine Ségur de Cabanac in 1810. On his death in 1841, the property passed to his son Frank, who was mayor of the town for about thirty years. In 1985 the estate was bought by Xavier Gardinier, and in 2006, the year of this wine, the Gardiniers brought in winemaker Michel Rolland as a consultant. The sale to Belgian entrepreneur Philippe Van de Vyvere, announced in 2017, was completed in early 2018.

Today the vineyard covers seventy hectares, farmed according to reasoned viticulture and harvested by hand. The wine matures in barriques, with new wood never exceeding half, and the estate still practices the traditional «à l'esquive» racking.

The vines grow on clay gravel, on rises and plateaux near the estuary; one section, towards Montrose, is on sandier gravel. Today the vineyard is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and a little Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In the 2003 Crus Bourgeois classification, Phélan Ségur was one of the nine Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnels, but the administrative courts annulled that classification in February 2007, a few months after this wine was harvested. Today the estate is not listed among the Médoc Crus Bourgeois.

The estate describes its style as based on elegance and finesse, in an appellation where power usually dominates. Of its 2006, the estate writes that it needed time to open up and that it is a true Saint-Estèphe, with character and firm tannins. 2006 was an uneven year in Bordeaux, with a very hot July, a cool, cloudy August, and rain during the harvest. According to the estate, with age its wine develops aromas of spices, ripe fruit, and leather.

This is the estate’s grand vin; since 1986, Phélan Ségur has also produced a second wine, Frank Phélan, named after the founder’s son. A Saint-Estèphe of this age should be served at 16-18 °C, with red meat, lamb, or aged cheeses.

In the STELT selection, this 2006 Phélan Ségur is a Saint-Estèphe to choose for discovering the estate’s style in the year Michel Rolland joined.
