chateau-troplong-mondot-saint-emilion-grand-cru-1983-075
Chateau Troplong Mondot Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 1983 AOC 0,75l

The 1983 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from Château Troplong Mondot is a red wine from Bordeaux’s Right Bank, in a 75 cl bottle. The estate occupies the appellation’s highest point, at 110 meters, on the Mondot hill. When this wine was harvested, Troplong Mondot was Grand Cru Classé; today the estate is Premier Grand Cru Classé.

The vineyard’s history dates back to 1700, and the château was built in 1745 by Abbot Raymond de Sèze. Around 1850, Raymond Troplong, a jurist and later president of the Senate under Napoleon III, completed the estate, and his surname was joined to that of Mondot. In 1936, it was bought by Alexandre Valette, a wine merchant. From the early 1980s, it was run by Christine Valette and her husband Xavier Pariente: this 1983 is one of their first vintages. Since 2017, the estate has belonged to the SCOR group, and has been run by Aymeric de Gironde.

Today Troplong Mondot harvests early, cold-macerates the grapes and vinifies at low temperature, with malolactic fermentation in tank. The wine matures half in new barriques and the rest in large casks and used barriques.

At the top of the hill, clay from the “molasses de l'Agenais” covers the asteria limestone typical of Saint-Émilion: according to the estate, this soil is found only here. The vineyard, exposed in all directions, today covers 37 hectares and is planted largely with Merlot, along with Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Cabernet Franc. Classified as Grand Cru Classé since 1955, Troplong Mondot was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé in 2006, a rank confirmed in 2012 and 2022.

1983 was a generous, high-quality vintage in Bordeaux. July was very hot and August hot, rainy and humid, conditions that encouraged downy mildew and rot; a dry, warm September and a sunny autumn then allowed the grapes to be harvested ripe. The 1983 reds have evolved faster than those of 1982. After more than forty years, a red wine like this is usually fully mature, with aromas of evolution in place of fruit.

This is the estate’s grand vin. Today, alongside it, Troplong Mondot produces Mondot, from plots on limestone soil, almost entirely Merlot and without new oak. A bottle over forty years old should be stood upright for a few hours before opening, then poured slowly or gently decanted into a carafe. Serve the wine at 16-17 °C with lamb, pigeon or truffle dishes.

In the STELT selection, this 1983 Troplong Mondot is a Saint-Émilion over forty years old, born when the estate was still Grand Cru Classé, for those who want to discover the appellation’s pinnacle through an old vintage.
