domaine-raymond-usseglio-chateauneuf-du-pape-2006-075
Domaine Raymond Usseglio Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2006 AOC 0,75l

The 2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils is the house’s classic red, the cuvée the family now calls Tradition, in a 75-centiliter bottle. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, recognized in 1936 among the first in France, extends across five communes between Avignon and Orange and allows thirteen grape varieties, or eighteen if color variants are counted.

The family’s story began in 1931, when Francis Usseglio left Piedmont for Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In 1948, Francis took on a vineyard estate as a sharecropper; in 1949, he made his first wine, and in 1962 he planted the first vineyard in his own name. In 1963, his son Raymond founded the domaine that bears his name with his wife Danielle, and the couple expanded it plot by plot. Since 1999, it has been run by their son Stéphane, who was twenty-two at the time: the 2006 was one of his harvests, too.

At the time of this vintage, the domaine covered about 22 hectares; today it works 24 in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, among the pebbles around Orange, the sands of Courthézon, and the alluvial clays of Crau and Bédarrides. The grapes are harvested by hand. Since the early 2010s, a few years after this vintage, the vineyards have been farmed biodynamically, and today the wines are certified organic and biodynamic, bearing the Demeter and Biodyvin labels.

Tradition is a blend led by Grenache, which now accounts for about 80%, complemented by Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault, and Counoise. The 2006 was also made from Grenache with four other grape varieties, and aged partly in tank and partly in barrel.

In the southern Rhône, 2006 was a dry vintage: rainfall was below average, the summer saw little rain, and cool nights late in the season helped develop color and aromas. The harvest lasted from early September to early October, when the last plots of Grenache and Mourvèdre were picked, with low yields. The vintage’s reds are remembered as generous, deeply colored, with soft tannins and good freshness. Over the years, the ruby color of young Châteauneuf-du-Pape takes on orange hues, while the fruit gives way to notes of undergrowth and spice.

In the domaine’s range, Tradition is the classic red, alongside more distinctive cuvées: the Cuvée Impériale, made almost entirely from Grenache grown on vines planted largely in 1902, and La Part des Anges, predominantly Mourvèdre. Serve a red wine like this at 16-18 °C, with game, meat in sauce, and braised beef.

In the STELT selection, this 2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the red wine for those who want to discover Grenache from the southern Rhône after twenty years in the bottle, made by a family that came from Piedmont.
