francois-raveneau-petit-chablis-2023-15
François Raveneau Petit Chablis 2023 AOC 1,5l

The Petit Chablis 2023 from Domaine François Raveneau is a Chardonnay white wine in the one-and-a-half-liter Magnum format. The Petit Chablis appellation, recognized in 1944, is the first level of the Chablis vineyard. Its vines grow at the top of the slopes or at the edge of the plateaus, on hard Portlandian limestone; the other Chablis wines are produced mainly on the older Kimmeridgian marls.

The domaine's history began in 1948, when François Raveneau combined the vineyards he had bought with those of his wife's family, the Dauvissats. François was the first in the family to bottle his own wine, and in the 1960s and 1970s he expanded the estate, including with grand cru plots. His son Jean-Marie joined him in the late 1970s, and his other son, Bernard, arrived in 1995. Today, the domaine is run by the third generation, cousins Isabelle, Bernard's daughter, and Maxime, Jean-Marie's son.

The domaine works around ten hectares, all planted with Chardonnay, and harvests entirely by hand. In the cellar, the wines ferment mostly in tanks and then mature in largely used oak barrels, which impart no new-wood aromas. For a long time, Raveneau worked mainly with feuillette, small Chablis barrels of 132 liters; larger barrels were also introduced in the new cellar, built in 2012-2013.

The Petit Chablis plot, about 0.8 hectares, is located on the plateau overlooking the grand cru vineyards. The vines were planted in 2010, and the first vintage was bottled in 2014: this is therefore a young vineyard of the domaine.

Petit Chablis is traditionally a dry, lively, light white wine, to be enjoyed in its early years. 2023 was a challenging but generous vintage: after a mild winter, a wet April and heavy pressure from powdery mildew and downy mildew, drought set in from spring, and September's heat brought the grapes to full ripeness. Harvest began around September 10, and the vintage's white wines are described as expressive, fruity and balanced. In Magnum format, the wine evolves more slowly because, with the same amount of air in the neck, the bottle contains twice as much wine.

In the Raveneau range, Petit Chablis is the first rung. Above it come Chablis, produced since 2007, then the premier crus, including Montée de Tonnerre, Butteaux and Vaillons, and finally three grand crus: Les Clos, Blanchot and Valmur. Serve this white wine at 9-10 °C, with oysters, prawns or fish tartare.

In the STELT selection, this Petit Chablis is the Raveneau to open when there are lots of people at the table: a Magnum of young Chardonnay, best served chilled.
