jean-claude-ramonet-chassagne-montrachet-blanc-2020-075
Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 2020 AOC 0,75l

Jean-Claude Ramonet's 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc is the estate's village white: a Chardonnay from the village appellation where the family has its winery. Chassagne is in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune, between Puligny-Montrachet and Santenay. It shares two grand crus with Puligny, Le Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet, while Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet lies entirely within its territory; since 1879, the village's name has also included that of Montrachet.

Pierre Ramonet arrived in Chassagne in the late 1920s, without vineyards. He bought grapes and made wine from them, gradually acquiring land: first a parcel in Ruchottes, then other vineyards in the village, and in 1978 a piece of Montrachet. Since the 1980s, the work has passed to his grandsons Noël and Jean-Claude, sons of André; today the estate bears Jean-Claude's name, and his daughter Anne-France works with him.

The estate's work follows a few principles. In the vineyard, the age of the vines matters, averaging around sixty years, as do very low yields; in the cellar, traditional winemaking and twelve to fifteen months of aging in oak barrels, around one-third of them new. The white wines remain in contact with the lees for a long time, which are stirred little or not at all.

White wine was not always the rule in Chassagne: until the mid-1980s, the village produced more red than white, but then the higher price of white wine led to Chardonnay being planted in many vineyards. Ramonet has long been one of the leading names for the village's white wines, and this wine bears its name without specifying a single vineyard: it is the estate's Chassagne in its most direct expression.

Ramonet's white wines are dense and concentrated, and can seem closed when young: they open up with air, so it's best to open them in advance or decant them. In 2020, the harvest in the Côte de Beaune began around August 20, after a hot summer with almost no rain; cool nights helped the grapes retain lively acidity, and the whites combine ripe fruit with freshness.

In the estate's range, it sits between Bourgogne Chardonnay and Chassagne's premier crus, such as Morgeot, Boudriotte and Ruchottes. Serve at 11-13 °C with baked fish, shellfish, risottos, white meats and hard cheeses.

In the STELT selection, this Chassagne-Montrachet is the most direct way to discover Ramonet at home, in the village where the family has worked for almost a century.
