maison-leroy-bourgogne-rouge-2017-075
Maison Leroy Bourgogne Rouge 2017 AOC 0,75l

The Bourgogne Rouge 2017 from Maison Leroy is a Pinot Noir from the regional Bourgogne appellation, selected and aged by the Leroy family’s négociant house in Auxey-Duresses, in a 75-centiliter bottle. The Bourgogne appellation, established in 1937, covers the vineyards of Yonne, Côte-d'Or and Saône-et-Loire.

Maison Leroy was founded in 1868, when François Leroy began trading wine in his hometown of Auxey-Duresses, near Meursault. His son Joseph expanded the business; Henri, Joseph’s son, joined the company in 1919, and in 1942 the family acquired half of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. In 1955, Henri’s daughter Lalou Bize-Leroy joined the house and later took the helm; from 1974 to 1992, she was also co-director of Romanée-Conti. Alongside the Maison are two other distinct entities: Domaine Leroy in Vosne-Romanée, established in 1988 with the purchase of Charles Noëllat’s vineyards, and Domaine d'Auvenay, Lalou’s estate in Saint-Romain.

Maison Leroy has no contracts with growers. For decades, Lalou Bize-Leroy selected the Maison's wines by tasting samples of new wine that brokers brought her without labels, and buying only some of them. The selected wines are aged and bottled by the Maison, and remain in the cellars in Auxey-Duresses until the house considers them ready. That is why the cellars still hold stocks of older vintages.

At the Maison, regional Bourgogne wines are not second-rate: the house considers them among its flagship wines, and much of its selection work focuses on them. This Bourgogne Rouge, made entirely from Pinot Noir, was released in 2024, seven years after the harvest.

The 2017 vintage in Burgundy was an early one, with volumes returning to normal after several harvests reduced by bad weather. A very warm spring brought budbreak forward; a late-April frost mainly affected the north of the region, with much less damage than in 2016. The first grapes were harvested in late August, two weeks ahead of average, in excellent sanitary conditions. For the reds, the trade association notes intense color, fresh fruit, and silky tannins, in a harmonious rather than opulent whole.

In the Maison's range, the Bourgogne Rouge is the regional red, alongside the Bourgogne Blanc; above these come the village, premier cru, and grand cru wines chosen vintage by vintage, from Santenay to Gevrey-Chambertin. A red Bourgogne with a few years in bottle is served at 14-16 °C, with poultry, roast veal, or pot-au-feu.

In STELT's selection, this 2017 Bourgogne Rouge is the wine to discover Maison Leroy with: a regional Pinot Noir, selected, aged, and released by the house only when it considers it ready.
