sesti-brunello-di-montalcino-2021-075
Sesti Brunello di Montalcino 2021 DOCG 0,75l

The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG from Sesti comes from the southern slopes of Montalcino, in the Sant'Angelo in Colle area, where the Sesti family tends the vineyards around the medieval hamlet of Castello di Argiano. It is 100% Sangiovese, from vines trained using the spur cordon system at around 350 meters, facing south, on soils formed from marine sediments.

The estate’s story begins far from wine. Giuseppe Maria Sesti, who grew up in Venice, studied music, art, and astronomy, and made astronomy his profession. In 1975, he and his wife Sarah bought the abandoned ruins of the village and castle of Argiano and painstakingly restored them. In the following years, he learned the work by helping his neighbors in the vineyard and cellar, and in 1991 he planted his own vines on the slopes around the castle. Since 1999, his daughter Elisa has worked alongside him and is now involved in every decision in the vineyard and cellar. The estate covers 102 hectares, 13 of which are vineyards; the rest is olive groves, pasture, and woodland.

From the beginning, the Sestis chose to make wines as naturally as possible, with minimal intervention and no chemicals. Giuseppe brought his knowledge of the moon’s influence on nature’s cycles to the vineyard and cellar, and the phases of the moon still guide the work. The estate is run according to organic and biodynamic principles, without official certifications, because the family has not found one that meets its standards.

This Brunello stands out for its patient aging. It ferments in stainless steel, like all the estate’s wines, then matures for more than three years in 30-hectoliter oak casks, well beyond the two years in wood required by the regulations. It is bottled without filtration or fining, then rests further before leaving the cellar.

The result is a Brunello with a classic character, in which the power of Sangiovese from Montalcino and the warmth of the southern slope coexist with a freshness that the large casks leave intact. This is a wine that opens up over time, in the glass as well as in the cellar, where it can rest for many years.

In Sesti’s range, it sits alongside the Riserva Phenomena, which dedicates its label each vintage to an astronomical phenomenon, and the Rosso di Montalcino: together, they are the three most classic expressions of the appellation. Serve at 18 °C, opening the bottle an hour beforehand, with red meat, braised dishes, game, and aged cheeses.

In the STELT selection, this Brunello is the Montalcino of a family that works at an unhurried pace and follows the lunar calendar.
