1945–2024 · Five regions · The sources that matter

Vintage guide

Every critic has their own scale and preferences. Here, we have combined the vintage charts from the leading international sources, standardized the scores, and calculated an average: a 1-to-5-star rating for every vintage from 1945 to today, to consult before buying—or opening a bottle. For the earlier decades, only vintages supported by reliable sources are included.

A clarification from someone who sells wine: the vintage is a map, not a verdict. In difficult vintages, great producers often make surprising wines at better prices; in legendary vintages, not everything is legendary. If you have any doubts about a specific bottle, ask us: it’s our profession.
