Tax-free shopping in Lucca

For visitors who live outside the European Union. We refund the VAT on the wine you buy in our Lucca shop: about 18% of what you pay.

What you get back

VAT on wine and spirits is 22%, already included in the price. We refund all of it and charge no fees: on €500 of wine you get €90.16 back.

Who can

Anyone whose residence is outside the European Union. What counts is where you live, not your nationality: for example, if you live in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway or Australia.

What you need

  • Your passport, or a document proving you live outside the European Union.
  • A purchase of more than €70, VAT included, on a single invoice.
  • Bottles for you or your family, travelling in your own luggage.
  • To leave the European Union within three months of the invoice date.
  • The bank details of the account where you want the refund.

How it works

  1. In the shop. Choose your bottles and show us your passport. You pay the full price and we issue an electronic tax-free invoice in OTELLO, the Italian Customs Agency's system. We give you a copy with the code for Customs, and we pack the bottles for your checked luggage.
  2. At the airport, before check-in. Go to the Customs office with your passport, boarding pass, invoice copy and bottles. Validation is digital. Sometimes Customs asks to see the bottles, so check them in afterwards.
  3. The validation reaches us. We see it directly in OTELLO: you don't need to send us anything.
  4. We refund the VAT by bank transfer to your account.

Questions

I have a connecting flight through another EU country.

Before check-in, ask Customs at your departure airport where to validate the invoice. If another country's Customs validates it, write to us at shop@steltwines.com and we'll tell you how to send us the stamped copy.

How many bottles can I take?

Italy sets no fixed number, as long as they are for you or your family and not for resale. Your home country sets the limits: check how much wine you can bring in without paying duty.

What if I don't go through Customs?

Without validation the VAT remains due and we can't refund it.

STELT. Wine, with discernment

STELT began as a selection project dedicated to wines and spirits that have a concrete reason to be included.

We do not work by slogans or winemaking ideologies. Each product enters STELT because it represents something: a relevant story, genuine rarity, a recognizable identity, or objective collectible value.

The selection does not follow trends or ready-made categories. It follows a criterion.

How we build the selection

STELT is not a generalist showcase.

It is a considered selection.

Alongside major historic names are lesser-known labels, always for a specific reason: consistent quality, historical importance, limited production, significant vintages, or stylistic consistency over time.

We do not include wines “to fill space” or to tell forced stories.

Every bottle must stand up to comparison in terms of value, today and over time.

Independence and consistency

Independence is what allows STELT to maintain a consistent approach.

We are not driven by volume or commercial obligations: this allows us to include only what we truly consider relevant.

Few products, chosen for what they are, not for what they claim to represent.

A practical approach

STELT works directly, without narrative overstructure.

Those who rely on us know they will find clear, well-founded, and defensible selections, whether for a private collector or a high-level restaurant or hospitality project.

We do not offer standard lists.

We offer choices that make sense.

Wine as an object of culture and choice

For STELT, wine is a cultural object, but also a conscious choice.

There is no need to mythologize every producer or sanctify every vineyard: what matters is the wine’s ability to maintain identity, relevance, and interest over time.

This approach allows us to work with iconic wines, mature vintages, rare productions, and references that have already demonstrated their specific significance in the history of wine.
