Description
Sesti’s Grangiovese 2024 is a Toscana IGT made from selected Sangiovese grapes, created by the family who also produce Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino at Castello di Argiano, on the southern slopes of Montalcino. It is the estate’s simplest red: a young, dry Sangiovese to enjoy at the table every day.
Behind it lies an unusual story. Giuseppe Maria Sesti, a Venetian by training and an astronomer by profession, arrived in Tuscany in 1975 with his wife Sarah and bought the ruins of Argiano, a hamlet with its own castle, long abandoned. The restoration took years; meanwhile, Giuseppe visited neighboring wineries, helped with the harvest and learned the trade. In 1991 he planted his vineyards around the castle, and since 1999 his daughter Elisa has worked with him full-time.
The estate's philosophy grew out of that apprenticeship: Giuseppe became convinced that great wines come from simplicity and care, and that chemistry upsets their balance. Since then, the Sesti family has worked naturally and follows the phases of the moon, a subject Giuseppe knows as an astronomer. The approach is organic and biodynamic, without official certification by the family's choice.
Like all Sesti wines, Grangiovese ferments in stainless steel. What makes the difference is the fruit, which Elisa considers the first responsibility of her work, together with a Montalcino character that remains recognizable even in a wine without an appellation: the same hands, the same calendar, the same idea of natural wine.
The result is a straightforward, easy-drinking red, with the fruit and freshness of Sangiovese front and center, best enjoyed young without waiting. It is dry, with no residual sugar, and pairs with everyday cooking without overpowering it.
It is the first of Sesti's reds, ahead of Monteleccio, Rosso di Montalcino and the Brunellos. Serve at 16 °C with cured meats, pasta with tomato sauce or ragù, pizza and grilled meats.
In the STELT selection, Grangiovese is the simplest way to get to know Sesti, ready to uncork without needing a special occasion.
