Description

This Avize Grand Cru 1997 from Jacquesson is a vintage Champagne made entirely from Chardonnay, a Blanc de Blancs from Avize, a Grand Cru village in the heart of the Côte des Blancs. This bottle is in Magnum format, holding one and a half liters.

Claude and Memmie Jacquesson founded the house in 1798 in Châlons-sur-Marne. In 1844, Adolphe Jacquesson patented the muselet, the wire cage that holds the cork in place. In 1974, the house passed to the Chiquet family, who moved it to Dizy; for nearly fifty years, it was run by Jean Chiquet and then his sons Jean-Hervé and Laurent. Since the end of 2022, Jacquesson has been part of the Artémis Domaines group.

As early as the 1990s, the Maison vinified in large oak casks, the foudres. Today, Jacquesson farms 36 hectares of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, certified organic since 2010, keeps only the must from the first pressing, does not fine or filter its wines, and favors long aging and low dosage.

This wine comes from three of the Maison’s plots on the lower slope of Avize, in the lieux-dits La Fosse, Némery and Champ Caïn, facing southeast and planted with Chardonnay between 1962 and 1983. Here, Campanian chalk comes close to the surface beneath thin, permeable soil. The wines from the three plots were vinified in 40- to 75-hectoliter foudres, blended and bottled for the second fermentation on June 3, 1998: around 25,000 bottles and nearly 1,200 magnums were produced.

1997 was a difficult vintage: frost at the start of winter, spring frosts affecting almost a quarter of the vineyard, cold and very rainy flowering, downy mildew and, in August, hail. A dry, sunny September with very cool nights saved the vintage: in Avize, the harvest began on September 22, and the Maison judged the musts to be excellent. Over the years, a Champagne made from Chardonnay usually loses its youthful vigor and develops deeper aromas of toast and dried fruit. In Magnum, this evolution is slower because there is twice as much wine for the same amount of air in the neck.

In the 1990s, Jacquesson’s range comprised a non-vintage Brut and, among the vintage wines, the Millésime, a blend from several villages, and this Avize Grand Cru. In 2000, the Chiquet brothers replaced the non-vintage Brut with the numbered cuvées in the 700 series, starting with 728. After the 2000 vintage, the Avize Grand Cru also gave way to Avize Champ Caïn, which has been made exclusively from the Champ Caïn plot, planted in 1962, since 2002.

In the STELT selection, this Avize Grand Cru 1997 in Magnum is a testament to Jacquesson in the 1990s: a mature Blanc de Blancs to share at leisure.
