Description
Jean-Claude Ramonet’s 2020 Bourgogne Chardonnay is the estate’s regional appellation Chardonnay from Chassagne-Montrachet. It bears the name Bourgogne, the first rung on the ladder of Burgundy wines, and the signature of a family that for decades has been a benchmark for Chassagne whites, from village wines to grand crus.
The story begins in the late 1920s, when Pierre Ramonet settled in Chassagne. For years he bought grapes and made wine in makeshift premises, then acquired his first vineyards, starting with a plot in Ruchottes; in 1978, he went on to buy a piece of Montrachet. When he died in 1994, the winery was already in the hands of his nephews Noël and Jean-Claude, André’s sons, who had been working there since the 1980s. Today, the labels bear Jean-Claude’s name; he works with his daughter Anne-France.
The estate’s approach rests on a few rules: very low yields and traditional winemaking. The whites remain on the lees for a long time, stirred only rarely, and age in oak barrels for twelve to fifteen months. New oak is used sparingly, generally for about one third of the barrels; only the Montrachet is aged entirely in new oak.
The Bourgogne is made by the same hands and in the same cellar as the premier crus and grand crus, and it too ages in barrel before bottling. The 2020 vintage was very early: a mild winter, budbreak around March 20, a hot, dry summer, and harvest beginning just after mid-August. The grapes arrived at the cellar ripe and healthy, without losing their acidity.
It is a more approachable Chardonnay than the estate’s crus, yet recognizable in style, with the freshness that the 2020 whites retained despite the heat. Like Ramonet’s other whites, it opens up with a little air: it is best to uncork it a few minutes before serving.
In Ramonet’s range, it comes before the village Chassagne-Montrachet, premier crus such as Morgeot, Boudriotte and Ruchottes, and the grand crus of the Montrachet hill. Serve at 10-12 °C with seafood appetizers, shellfish, white meats and medium-aged cheeses.
In the STELT selection, this Bourgogne is a first step toward Ramonet’s whites, from one of the great families of Chassagne-Montrachet.
