Description
Jean-Claude Ramonet’s Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Morgeot 2020 comes from the largest of Chassagne’s premier crus. Morgeot covers over fifty hectares in the southern part of the commune, towards Santenay, and comprises nineteen lieux-dits. In the Middle Ages, these lands belonged to the Cistercian monks of Maizières Abbey. For a long time, Morgeot was chiefly red wine country, and even today much of the village’s premier cru Pinot Noir comes from here.
The Ramonet family arrived in Chassagne in the late 1920s, with Pierre, who for years bought grapes and made wine from them before owning his own vineyards. The first vineyard was a plot in Ruchottes; in 1978, a piece of Montrachet followed. Pierre died in 1994, by which time the domaine was already run by his grandsons Noël and Jean-Claude; today the wines are released under Jean-Claude’s name.
At the heart of Ramonet’s work are old vines, averaging around sixty years of age, very low yields and traditional winemaking. After fermentation, the whites remain on the lees for a long time, stirred infrequently, and mature for twelve to fifteen months in oak barrels, around a third of them new.
Morgeot is not a uniform vineyard. Heavy clay soils predominate in the lower part, producing the fullest wines; higher up, the soil becomes lighter, with marl and stones. Ramonet grows both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay here and bottles a red Morgeot and a white one: this is the white.
Among the village’s premier cru whites, those from Morgeot are usually the broadest and most structured, with good ageing potential. In Ramonet’s dense style, reluctant to reveal itself when young, this character needs time and air: it is best to open the bottle in advance or decant it. 2020 was one of the earliest vintages ever recorded in Burgundy; despite the heat and drought, the whites retained surprising freshness.
In the domaine’s range, Morgeot is one of Chassagne’s premier crus, alongside Ruchottes, Boudriotte and Vergers, below the grand crus of the Montrachet hillside. Serve at 12-14 °C with fish in sauce, lobster, poultry and veal in cream sauce, or with hard cheeses such as Comté.
In STELT's selection, this Morgeot is the Chassagne premier cru to choose when looking for a full-bodied white, to open leisurely or leave in the cellar for a few more years.
