Description
Jean-Claude Ramonet’s 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Boudriotte comes from the southern part of Chassagne, within the large Morgeot area. The name Boudriotte can be used by six lieux-dits, whose wines are also entitled to the Morgeot designation: those who harvest and vinify them separately, as Ramonet does, bottle them under their own name.
The estate was founded in the late 1920s, when Pierre Ramonet began making wine in Chassagne from purchased grapes. The vineyards came one by one, starting with a parcel in Ruchottes, and in 1978, a part of Montrachet as well. Pierre died in 1994; his work had already passed to his grandsons Noël and Jean-Claude, André’s sons. Today the wines are released under Jean-Claude’s name, and his daughters, including Anne-France, work with him.
At Ramonet, the work is done with old vines and low yields, and the wines are made in the traditional way. The whites mature in barrels for twelve to fifteen months and spend a long time on the lees, without frequent stirring. New oak accounts for about a third; only the Montrachet matures entirely in new oak.
La Boudriotte was once mainly red wine territory, and Chardonnay has gained considerable ground there over the past few decades. The soil varies from one spot to another: light-colored marl in Boudriotte proper, and more compact red clay in the lower lieux-dits. Where limestone predominates, the whites are usually more taut and refined than those from Morgeot. Ramonet also grows Pinot Noir here, producing Clos de la Boudriotte, one of its best-known reds; this bottle, however, is the white wine, made solely from Chardonnay.
Like the estate’s other white wines, this Premier Cru is dense and rather closed when young: it shows its best with some air and a few years in bottle. In 2020, the summer heat and drought had little effect on the Chardonnay, which produced almost full yields; harvest began just after mid-August, with ripe grapes and well-preserved acidity.
In Ramonet’s range, Boudriotte is one of Chassagne’s premier crus and complements Morgeot: two neighbouring vineyards, two different interpretations of the southern part of the village. Serve at 12-14 °C with baked or sauced fish, shellfish, white meats and aged cheeses.
In STELT’s selection, this Boudriotte is a Chassagne premier cru to keep in the cellar and open at leisure, the white version of a vineyard that Ramonet also interprets as a red.
