Monteverro Chardonnay 2023 IGT 0,75l

Monteverro's Chardonnay is a Toscana IGT wine made in the hills of Capalbio, in the southernmost part of the Maremma, a few kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is made entirely from Chardonnay grapes, hand-harvested in the second half of August from certified organic vineyards; the 2023 vintage has 13% alcohol.

Monteverro was founded in 2003, when German entrepreneur Georg Weber bought an estate near Capalbio and decided to plant vines there. The first wines came with the 2008 harvest, made by resident winemaker Matthieu Taunay, with consultant Michel Rolland.

The vineyards cover three hills, while the rest of the estate is left to olive groves and Mediterranean scrub. Everything is farmed organically. Each parcel is harvested and vinified separately, so the work in the cellar follows the differences in the soil rather than flattening them.

For the Chardonnay, the grapes are whole-bunch pressed and the must ferments spontaneously, with each parcel kept separate. The wine then ages for 14 months: half in French oak barriques, mostly new, and half in egg-shaped concrete vats.

Using both vessels together is key to its style. The wood adds structure and breadth, while the concrete preserves the purity of the fruit and freshness. The result is a sunny Chardonnay, as befits the Maremma, yet kept in balance by the work in the cellar, with an approach that looks to the great white wines of Burgundy.

In Monteverro's range, made up mainly of reds such as Monteverro, Terra di Monteverro, Tinata and Verruzzo, the Chardonnay is the estate's white wine, given the same care as its flagship wines.

In the selection of STELT, this Chardonnay tells the story of a Maremma that looks to Burgundy: a structured white wine that calls for dishes to match and should be served not too cold, between 12 and 14 degrees, perhaps in a large glass.
