Description

This Château Chasse-Spleen 1967 is a red wine from Moulis-en-Médoc, in a 75 cl bottle. The appellation, recognized in 1938, is the smallest of the Médoc’s communal appellations: a strip about a dozen kilometers long between Margaux and Saint-Julien, with no frontage on the estuary. Chasse-Spleen originates on a gravel hillock in the hamlet of Grand Poujeaux.

According to the château’s account, in 1820 an inheritance divided the Gressier estate, and the part that went to the daughter, who married a Castaing, remained without a proper name until around 1863. Rosa Ferrière, already widowed, found one by recalling a legend: Lord Byron, a guest at Gressier, supposedly praised that wine as unrivaled for driving away spleen, a word Baudelaire had made fashionable in France. In 1912, the property passed to the Segnitz family, merchants from Bremen, and after the First World War it was confiscated as enemy property.

In 1922, Chasse-Spleen was bought by Prosper Lahary, a pine-forest owner in the Landes, and soon its management passed to his son Franck. In 1967, the château therefore belonged to the Lahary family, who could use income from the timber to support the vineyard in difficult vintages. The château notes that in 1964, three years before this harvest, the Médoc’s first underground chai was built there.

The soil combines gravel over a clay-limestone subsoil and clay over limestone, and the red vineyard is now planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with some Petit Verdot. In the 1932 list of crus bourgeois, compiled by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and never officially approved by the ministry, Chasse-Spleen was among the six in the highest group, the “supérieurs exceptionnels.” Today the château is no longer part of the crus bourgeois system.

In Bordeaux, 1967 had a hot, dry summer and a September that was mostly cold and damp; in the Médoc, the red wines were harvested in October, amid intermittent rain. The harvest was abundant, producing lighter wines that were ready earlier than those of the decade’s great vintages; the areas where Merlot predominates did better, and Sauternes especially so. At this age, a Médoc red usually has a brick-tinged color, very softened tannins, evolved aromas, and sediment at the bottom.

In those years, the range was simpler than it is today: the second wine, Oratoire de Chasse-Spleen, was created in 1979, and the white wine has been on sale since 1995. This bottle comes from the Laharys’ final decade, when, in the mid-1970s, they sold the château to Jacques Merlaut.

In the STELT selection, this 1967 Chasse-Spleen bears witness to the Lahary era: a Moulis to open at leisure, for those who want to discover what a red Médoc becomes after almost sixty years in bottle.
