Description

This Château La Lagune 2004 is a red Haut-Médoc in a one-and-a-half-liter Magnum format. Château La Lagune is a third growth in the 1855 classification and is located in Ludon-Médoc, two kilometers from the Garonne: it is the southernmost classified growth in the Médoc. According to the supplier's product sheet, this Magnum was released directly from the château cellars in 2026.

The estate was founded in the sixteenth century in a village that grew up around natural ponds, from which it takes its name. In the eighteenth century, the Lavaud family had the chartreuse that can still be seen today built. In the twentieth century, Georges Brunet restored the vineyard, and in 1961 the property passed to René Chayoux, owner of the Champagne house Ayala. In the early 2000s, Château La Lagune was acquired by the Frey family, and 2004 was the first vintage made by Caroline Frey, a winemaker trained at the school of Denis Dubourdieu.

With the Frey family came major vineyard work, a new winery, and a larger chai. Today, the hand-selected grapes are vinified parcel by parcel in a gravity-flow winery, and the grand vin matures for a year or slightly longer in French oak barriques. In 2016, the vineyard switched to organic farming, and in 2021 the estate received Biodyvin biodynamic certification.

The vineyard, around 110 hectares, covers a ridge of sand and fine gravel deposited by the Garonne: warm, well-drained soils over a cooler subsoil. Cabernet Sauvignon is the main grape variety, alongside Merlot and Petit Verdot, which has always held a special place here: some vines are sixty years old, and French public research is selecting a new clone from these plants.

In the southern Médoc, 2004 is remembered as a classic vintage, without extremes: a mild summer extended the ripening period, and a dry, sunny September allowed each parcel to be harvested at just the right time. The wines of Château La Lagune are traditionally fine and balanced, combining the finesse of the gravel soils with the strength of the Médoc. In Magnum format, the wine evolves more slowly because there is twice as much wine for the same amount of air in the neck: for this reason, a twenty-year-old Magnum is generally less evolved than the same vintage in bottle.

In the estate's range, this is the grand vin; alongside it is Moulin du Château La Lagune, a second wine with more Merlot, enjoyable even in its early years. Serve this wine at around 16-18 °C with roasted red meat, lamb, game, or mature cheeses.

In the STELT selection, this 2004 Haut-Médoc is a troisième cru classé in Magnum to open at a large gathering.
