Description

This Château Palmer 1979 is a red Margaux in a 75 cl bottle. Château Palmer is a third growth in the 1855 classification and is located in Cantenac. According to the supplier's description, the wine level in this bottle is slightly low.

In 1814, Charles Palmer, a British officer and future general, bought the domaine de Gascq, already known for its wines, expanded it and gave it his own name; in 1853, the estate passed to the brothers Émile and Isaac Pereire, bankers, who built the neo-Renaissance château. In 1938, Palmer was bought by four families in the Bordeaux wine trade, and today two remain, the Mähler-Besse and Sichel families. In 1979, the estate was run by Bertrand Bouteiller, son of a Mähler-Besse, and the Chardon family, régisseurs from 1938 to 1996, oversaw the vineyards and cellar.

Today, Château Palmer is run by Thomas Duroux, who joined in 2004, and the vineyard is farmed biodynamically: the decision to convert was made in 2014, and it was certified by Demeter in 2018. The grand vin matures for twenty to twenty-two months, first in barriques, less than half of which are new, then in large casks.

The 66-hectare vineyard is located on the plateau des Brauzes, a terrace of gravel deposited by the Garonne, with soils that are more clay-rich than average for Margaux. Château Palmer grows Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in almost equal proportions, with a touch of Petit Verdot: an unusual proportion of Merlot for the Médoc. In 1979, Cabernet Sauvignon accounted for a larger share: 58%, with 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc.

At Palmer, the 1979 harvest took place from October 3 to 16, following a late flowering that reached full bloom only on June 21 and a beautiful summer. The 1979 harvest was the largest since 1934, but at Palmer the bunches were small and healthy, with lively tannins and good acidity, producing wines with color and structure that were suited to slow aging. The house recalls that 1979 has not gone down in memory alongside the great vintages, but emphasizes its finesse. At more than forty years old, a Margaux like this usually has softened tannins and tertiary aromas of leather and undergrowth.

Since 1998, the house’s range has included Alter Ego alongside its grand vin, a second wine that is more approachable when young. Château Palmer, on the other hand, is a wine to lay down; according to the house, it can take years, sometimes decades, to express itself fully. Serve this Palmer at around 16-17 °C, pouring it slowly, with pigeon, roasted white meats or mushrooms.

In STELT’s selection, this 1979 Margaux is the third cru to choose for an anniversary of that year or to discover Palmer in an older vintage.
