Description
This Château Chasse-Spleen 2001 is a red wine from Moulis-en-Médoc, the smallest communal appellation in the Médoc, in a 75 cl bottle. 2001 is one of the first harvests under Céline Villars's management.
In 1976, Chasse-Spleen was bought by Jacques Merlaut (1911-2008), a Bordeaux wine merchant who later brought together several Médoc châteaux, including Gruaud-Larose. His daughter Bernadette Villars ran the château, which credits her with much of its reputation; after her premature death, her daughter Claire succeeded her. Céline, Claire's sister, joined in 2000 and is the château's president, with her husband Jean-Pierre Foubet as managing director.
Chasse-Spleen's work is based on selecting plots, divided into three classes: A plots produce the grand vin almost every year, B plots are included or not depending on the season, and C plots go into the second wine. The choice is made by tasting the grapes, because the soil stays the same while the juice changes from year to year; as a vineyard ages, it can move up from class C to A.
The terroir combines gravel over clay-limestone subsoil and clay over limestone; in 2022, 80 percent of the 130 hectares of vines were on gravel. For 2001, the château lists the harvest of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. In the official 2003 classification of crus bourgeois, Chasse-Spleen was one of the nine Exceptionnels; in 2007, the Bordeaux Administrative Court of Appeal annulled that classification, and the château has remained outside the system: it appears in neither the 2020 nor the 2025 classification.
According to the château's information sheet, a mild, rainy winter in 2001 brought the vines into bud early, but April was damp and cold; May and June were dry, rain returned in July, and August was hot. September remained cooler than normal, and the harvest was late: Merlot from October 2 to 8, and Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot from the 9th to the 16th. In Bordeaux, 2001 is considered a classic vintage, more tannic than 2000. According to the appellation rules, Moulis wines reach their peak after seven to ten years; after more than twenty years in bottle, a red like this typically has softened tannins and evolved aromas.
Alongside the grand vin, the château has produced its second wine, Oratoire de Chasse-Spleen, since 1979 and, from its Haut-Médoc plots, Héritage de Chasse-Spleen, called Ermitage until 2000. Since 1995, Chasse-Spleen has also sold a white wine, as Bordeaux Blanc. In 2003, the family bought Château Gressier Grand Poujeaux, the estate from which Chasse-Spleen had separated in 1820.
In the STELT selection, this Chasse-Spleen 2001 is a classic Médoc with more than twenty years in bottle, to be served with roasted meats, lamb, or game.
