Description
The 1993 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from Château Figeac is a 75 cl bottle of red wine from Bordeaux's Right Bank, from an estate on the border with Pomerol. In 1993, Figeac was Premier Grand Cru Classé, as it had been since 1955, and in 2022 it was promoted to the highest rank, Premier Grand Cru Classé A. According to the supplier's description, the label on this bottle is slightly damaged.
Figeac's history begins with a Gallo-Roman villa from the 2nd century, which belonged to the Figeacus family. At the end of the 18th century, the estate covered almost two hundred hectares, and in 1832 it began to be sold off in parcels. In 1892, the estate was bought by Henriette de Chèvremont and her husband André Villepigue, Thierry Manoncourt's grandparents. Thierry Manoncourt, an agricultural engineer, arrived at Figeac in 1947 intending to stay for a year and managed it until his death in 2010; from 1988 to 2013, management was entrusted to his son-in-law, Count Eric d'Aramon. The Manoncourt family still owns it.
Thierry Manoncourt studied the soils in depth and chose the combination of grape varieties that defines Figeac's style. In 1970, Manoncourt decided to age all the wine in new barriques and bottle it entirely at the château. Since 2021, the wine has been made in a new gravity-flow winery, which allows each parcel to be vinified separately.
The estate's 54 hectares form a single plot, and the vines grow on three gravel mounds of quartz and flint, several metres deep, over blue clay: a soil that the estate calls a geological exception in the appellation. On these gravels, the two Cabernets, Sauvignon and Franc, make up about two thirds of the blend, whereas Merlot usually dominates on the Right Bank.
1993 was a difficult vintage in Bordeaux: after a hot July and August, September was very rainy, and the rain continued through the harvest. Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, harvested before the Médoc, suffered less. The estate describes its wine as one of the Bordeaux wines that develops best over time. After more than thirty years, a red wine of this style has usually moved beyond youthful fruit toward more evolved notes.
This wine is the estate's grand vin, and since the 1945 vintage Figeac has also produced a second wine, La Grange Neuve de Figeac, called Petit-Figeac since 2012. Like any old vintage, this wine should be opened slowly and, if necessary, decanted into a carafe to separate it from the sediment. Serve the wine at 16-17 °C with roast red meat or game birds.
In STELT’s selection, this 1993 Figeac is the Saint-Émilion for those seeking the appellation’s more unusual side: a Premier Grand Cru Classé born on gravel, with Cabernet at its heart.
