Description
This Château La Fleur-Pétrus 1992 is a Pomerol from the plateau, the appellation's highest terrace, bottled in a 75 cl format. The vineyard lies between Château Lafleur and Petrus. La Fleur-Pétrus is not a second wine of Petrus: since the 18th century, it has borne the names of the two lieux-dits, Pétrus and La Fleur, where its plots were located.
Jean-Pierre Moueix, born in Corrèze in 1913, founded his wine trading house in Libourne in 1937, and La Fleur-Pétrus, purchased in 1950, was his first acquisition. In 1992, the house was headed by his son Christian, who joined the business in 1970, first to look after the vineyards and then to handle the trade; today, Christian runs it with his son Edouard, and La Fleur-Pétrus remains in this branch of the family.
The estate sums up its approach in one principle: great wines come from great grapes. The vines are tended by hand, plant by plant, and yields are controlled in part through green harvesting, which Christian Moueix first practiced in 1973. The harvest is carried out by hand, plot by plot, and the approach in the cellar is classic: today, the wine is aged for sixteen to eighteen months in barriques, half of them new.
La Fleur-Pétrus gets its character from the meeting of gravel and clay on the plateau, over an iron-rich subsoil: according to the estate, the gravelly plots lend elegance, while the clay plots produce velvety, dense, structured wines. In 1992, the vineyard was smaller than its current 18.7 hectares, reached with vines purchased from Château Le Gay in 1994 and with a historic plateau plot in 2012. At the time, the grapes were Merlot and Cabernet Franc; today, Merlot accounts for 99.5 percent, with a little Petit Verdot. Pomerol has no official classification.
In Bordeaux, 1992 saw early flowering and a hot, dry start to summer, followed by heavy rain: August was very rainy, and the rain returned in the second half of September. The harvest was abundant, and thinning the grape clusters in August proved decisive; Pomerol is considered one of the areas that came through it best. The appellation rules describe Pomerol wines as full-bodied, without harshness, and capable of long aging; after more than thirty years, a wine like this usually has evolved aromas and softened tannins.
In the Moueix family portfolio, La Fleur-Pétrus is joined in Pomerol by Trotanoy, acquired in 1953, and Hosanna, acquired in 1999; the family also owns Bélair-Monange, a premier grand cru classé of Saint-Émilion.
In the STELT selection, this La Fleur-Pétrus 1992 is a Pomerol from the plateau, with over thirty years in bottle, for those who want to discover the Moueix family's style in a rainy vintage.
