Description
This Château Lascombes 1978 is a red Margaux in a one-and-a-half-litre Magnum format. Château Lascombes, at the entrance to the village of Margaux, is a second growth in the 1855 classification. The 1978 vintage went down in Bordeaux history as the vintage of the miracle.
The estate's name recalls the knight Antoine de Lascombes, born in 1625: his son Jean acquired the property, then called Segonnes, and in 1805 the owner Jean-Baptiste Loriague gave it its current name. In April 1952, Alexis Lichine learned that Lascombes was for sale and bought it with a group of American investors. Lichine, who is credited with introducing great French wines to the United States, ran the estate until 1971, when Château Lascombes was sold to the British group Bass Charrington.
When Lichine arrived, the vineyard was small and fragmented: the new owner bought more land, planted new vines and restored Lascombes to the level of its rank. Lichine is also credited with inventing wine tourism. The 1978 vintage, meanwhile, dates from the years of English ownership, which lasted until 2001.
The heart of the vineyard is Lascombes hill, which reaches twenty metres in height: for the Médoc, it is a significant rise, and on these poor soils the vines must drive their roots deep. The historic plots are found on the hill, known as Les Régies, Les Doumens, Curton and Terrefort, which earned the estate the rank of second growth in 1855.
In 1978, spring and early summer were cool and rainy, and the vines remained behind schedule until August. Then a long period of high pressure brought sunshine and warmth through late autumn, and the harvest began in the first days of October, with ripe grapes and good acidity. After almost fifty years, a Margaux of this kind usually has tannins that have softened and evolved aromas, in which the fruit gives way to notes of forest floor, leather and tobacco. In Magnum format, with twice the wine for the same amount of air in the neck, this evolution is slower.
In the estate's range, this is the grand vin; the second wine has been called Chevalier de Lascombes since 1997, in tribute to the knight Antoine. As with any old vintage, the Magnum should be poured slowly, leaving any sediment at the bottom. This Margaux is best served at around 16-18 °C with roast red meat, game and aged cheeses.
In the STELT selection, this Margaux from 1978 is the Magnum to open for an anniversary from that year, or to discover the vintage of the miracle in a large format.
