Description

This Château Monbrison 1998 is a red Margaux in a 75 cl bottle. The estate is located in Arsac, one of the communes in the appellation, and is a small family-owned property that is not part of the 1855 classification. 1998 is one of Laurent Vonderheyden’s first vintages at the helm of the estate, a role he has held since 1992.

Monbrison dates back to the 18th century. In the early 1920s, the estate was purchased by Robert Meacham Davis, an American pastor and commissioner of the American Red Cross; in the 1930s, the vineyard was abandoned. In 1955, his youngest daughter, Elizabeth, took over the property and revived it with her husband, Christian Vonderheyden: in 1963, they planted twelve hectares of vines around the house. Their second son, Jean-Luc Vonderheyden, ran Monbrison in the 1980s, until his death in 1992; since then, it has been run by his younger brother Laurent, who returned from the United States and is now joined by his daughter Alix.

Monbrison’s work starts in the vineyard. The first vines planted during the estate’s revival date back to 1963, and the family renews its plots using massal selection from its own vineyard. Today, the wine matures for nine to fourteen months, depending on the vintage, in stainless steel tanks, wooden vats, amphorae or barriques, and the estate holds HVE Level 3 environmental certification.

The vineyard lies on thick layers of Pyrenean gravel, several meters deep, which drain water very well and are suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. Some veins of clay in the subsoil, on the other hand, are home to Merlot and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon is the main grape variety, at around sixty percent, followed by Merlot and a small proportion of Petit Verdot.

In Margaux, 1998 had one of the hottest and driest Augusts ever recorded, which halted vine growth early. 1998 is remembered above all as a great vintage for Merlot, more consistent on the Right Bank, in Pomerol and Saint-Émilion: in the Médoc, the late-September rains arrived when many Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were not yet fully ripe, and the results were more varied. Nearly thirty years after the harvest, a Margaux of this kind usually has softened tannins and aromas that move from fruit toward notes of woodland, tobacco, and spice.

In the estate’s range, the grand vin, Château Monbrison, is joined by a second wine, Bouquet de Monbrison. This Margaux should be served at around 16-18 °C, opened an hour beforehand, with red meat, duck, or hard cheeses.

In the STELT selection, this 1998 Margaux is an older vintage from a small family estate, for those who want to discover Margaux beyond the classified growths.
