Description
Marchesi Antinori's Tignanello 2014 is a Tuscan red made from Sangiovese with Cabernet, in a 0.75-liter bottle. It comes from the eponymous vineyard at Tenuta Tignanello and is released as Toscana IGT.
The Antinori family has made wine in Tuscany since 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Arte dei Vinattieri of Florence. The Tenuta Tignanello is in the Chianti Classico area, between the Greve and Pesa valleys, and the vineyard that gives the wine its name has belonged to the family since the early 20th century.
In 1970, this vineyard produced a wine of its own for the first time, still as Chianti Classico Riserva. From the 1971 vintage, the wine came out under the sole name Tignanello, outside the Chianti rules of the time: it was aged in barriques and, in the following years, Sangiovese was joined by Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, while white grapes were excluded. This choice paved the way for the Tuscan reds the world calls Supertuscans.
The Tignanello vineyard lies at an altitude of 350 to 400 meters, on marl and limestone soils. Next to it is the Solaia vineyard, from which the family makes a Cabernet-dominant red. Today, Tignanello is a Toscana IGT, usually around 80% Sangiovese, with Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Cabernet Franc.
2014 was a difficult vintage in Tuscany, with a cool, rainy summer: Cabernet Sauvignon had a larger share than usual in the blend, and about a third less was produced. After more than ten years in the bottle, a Tignanello from a cool vintage like this is generally mature, with more developed aromas than fruity ones.
In the Antinori range, Tignanello sits alongside Solaia and the estate's Chianti Classico wines. A red like this is served at 16-18 °C, with red meat, game or aged cheeses.
In the STELT selection, this 2014 Tignanello is an older vintage with which to discover Tignanello after more than ten years in the bottle.
