Description

Marchesi Antinori's 2018 Tignanello is a Tuscan red made from Sangiovese and Cabernet, in a 0.75-litre bottle. It comes from the vineyard of the same name at the Tenuta Tignanello estate and is released as Toscana IGT.

The Antinori family has been making wine in Tuscany since 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Florentine Guild of Winemakers. The Tenuta Tignanello estate is located in the Chianti Classico area, between the Greve and Pesa valleys, and the family has owned the vineyard that gives the wine its name since the early 20th century.

In 1970, this vineyard produced a wine of its own for the first time, still as a Chianti Classico Riserva. Starting with the 1971 vintage, the wine was released under the name Tignanello alone, outside the Chianti rules of the time: it was matured in barriques, and in the following years, Sangiovese was joined by Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, while white grapes were excluded. This choice paved the way for the Tuscan reds the world calls Super Tuscans.

The Tignanello vineyard lies at an altitude of 350 to 400 metres, on marl and limestone soils. Solaia's vineyard is next to it, where the family produces a red wine made predominantly from Cabernet. Today, Tignanello is a Toscana IGT, usually around 80% Sangiovese, with Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Cabernet Franc.

The 2018 vintage had a rainy spring and a summer without excessive heat; in September, the wide day-to-night temperature swings accompanied the ripening of the grapes. With seven years in bottle, a red like this is beginning to show the aromas of maturation alongside the fruit.

In the Antinori range, Tignanello sits alongside Solaia and the estate's Chianti Classico wines. A red like this should be served at 16-18 °C, with red meat, game, or aged cheeses.

In the STELT selection, this 2018 Tignanello is a Super Tuscan to open now or leave in the cellar for a few more years.
