Description

Marchesi Antinori's 2022 Tignanello is a Tuscan red made from Sangiovese and Cabernet, bottled in 0.75-litre format. It comes from the eponymous vineyard of the Tenuta Tignanello and is released as Toscana IGT.

The Antinori family has made wine in Tuscany since 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Arte dei Vinattieri in Florence. The Tenuta Tignanello lies in the Chianti Classico area, between the Greve and Pesa valleys, and the vineyard that gives the wine its name has belonged to the family since the early 20th century.

In 1970, this vineyard produced a wine of its own for the first time, still as a Chianti Classico Riserva. From the 1971 vintage, the wine was released under the name Tignanello alone, outside the Chianti rules of the time: it was aged in barriques, and in the following years, Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were blended with the Sangiovese, while white grapes were excluded. This choice paved the way for the Tuscan reds the world calls Supertuscans.

The Tignanello vineyard lies at an altitude of 350 to 400 metres, on marl and limestone soils. Nearby is the Solaia vineyard, from which the family makes a red wine predominantly from Cabernet. Today, Tignanello is a Toscana IGT, usually around 80% Sangiovese, with Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Cabernet Franc.

2022 in Tuscany was a hot, dry year, with a dry spring and summer and above-average temperatures in June and July. This Tignanello blends 78% Sangiovese, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc. When young, a red with this structure is at its best with a little air, and as it ages in the bottle, the Sangiovese develops broader aromas.

In the Antinori range, Tignanello sits alongside Solaia and the estate's Chianti Classico wines. A red like this is served at 16-18 °C, with red meat, game or aged cheeses.

In the STELT selection, this 2022 Tignanello is the Supertuscan that changed Tuscan wine, from the latest vintage.
