Description
Marchesi Tignanello 2020 Antinori is a Tuscan red made from Sangiovese with Cabernet, in a 0.75-litre bottle. It comes from the namesake vineyard of the Tenuta Tignanello and is released as Toscana IGT.
The Antinori family has made wine in Tuscany since 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Arte dei Vinattieri of Florence. The Tenuta Tignanello is located in the Chianti Classico area, between the Greve and Pesa valleys, and the family has owned the vineyard that gives the wine its name since the beginning of the twentieth century.
In 1970, this vineyard produced a wine of its own for the first time, still as Chianti Classico Riserva. Starting with the 1971 vintage, the wine was released under the sole name Tignanello, outside the Chianti rules of the time: it was aged in barriques and, in the following years, Sangiovese was joined by Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, while white grapes were excluded. This choice paved the way for the Tuscan reds the world calls Super Tuscans.
The Tignanello vineyard lies at an altitude of 350 to 400 metres, on marl and limestone soils. Nearby is the Solaia vineyard, from which the family produces a Cabernet-dominant red. Today, Tignanello is a Toscana IGT, usually around 80% Sangiovese, with Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Cabernet Franc.
The 2020 is also made from the estate’s blend, predominantly Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. With a few years in the bottle, a Tignanello begins to bring together the fruit of Sangiovese and more evolved aromas, and can remain in the cellar for a long time yet.
In the Antinori range, Tignanello sits alongside Solaia and the estate’s Chianti Classico wines. A red like this is served at 16-18 °C, with red meat, game, or aged cheeses.
In the STELT selection, this 2020 Tignanello is a classic of modern Tuscany, with a few extra years in the bottle.
